Energy Economics is pleased to support non-profit organizations and First Nations in the Columbia Basin region who are eligible for the Columbia Basin Trust Non-Profit SMART Grants – Stream 2. This program provides significant financial support to help cover the costs of solar energy systems and related building energy upgrades.
What is the Non-Profit SMART Grant?
The Non-Profit SMART Grants – Stream 2 is a funding program offered by the Columbia Basin Trust that helps non-profit organizations and First Nations invest in energy-efficient, renewable energy upgrades. This includes solar photovoltaic (PV) systems that are connected to the utility grid (net-metered systems).
Eligible applicants can receive:
- Up to 75% of project costs covered
- Maximum of $50,000 in funding per solar project
- Additional funding available (up to $150,000) for broader building energy efficiency upgrades
Who Is Eligible?
This program is available to:
- Registered non-profit organizations
- First Nations
- Applicants must be located within the Columbia Basin Trust service region and own, lease, or operate a facility within that area.
Solar Project Requirements
To qualify for the SMART Grant, solar projects must:
- Be grid-tied (net-metered)
- Be located in the Columbia Basin Trust region
- Not exceed the organization’s annual electricity consumption
- Provide a clear financial return on investment (ROI)

- Expression of Interest (EOI): May 14, 2025
- Full Application Deadline (if invited): October 8, 2025
