The BC Hydro Energy Storage Incentive (ESI) program offers direct financial support to help businesses install energy storage systems (ESS) that improve reliability, lower energy costs, and support grid resiliency. This is not a loan — it’s a funding incentive you won’t need to repay.
Maximum Incentives:
- Up to $10,000 per kilowatt (kW) of nominated battery capacity
- Up to 80% of eligible project costs
- Incentives scaled to system performance and size

How It Works
Installing a battery energy storage system with BC Hydro’s support is straightforward:
Energy Storage Installation
- Install a new energy storage system connected to your facility (batteries must be new and not yet purchased).
- System must be capable of automatically responding to BC Hydro dispatch signals to discharge during peak demand periods.
- Batteries recharge during off-peak hours to minimize impact on your operations.
Incentive Calculation
The incentive is calculated based on nominated battery size and project cost:
- $10,000 per kW nominated for dispatch
- Or $10,000 per kWh ÷ 4 nominated for dispatch
- Or 80% of total project costs — whichever is lowest
10-Year Contract
Participants must agree to a 10-year contract allowing BC Hydro to dispatch the battery for demand flexibility up to two times daily.
